Vox Media Turns to Cloudian Hyperstore to Meet Growing Archive Demand<\/h2>\n

Company automates archive process and eliminates steps\u00a0to accelerate workflow by 10X<\/h3>\n

Vox Media is a digital media company known for its high-profile brands including\u00a0Vox, SB Nation, The Verge, Racked, Eater, Curbed, Recode, and Polygon.\u00a0Headquartered in New York, the company also has offices in D.C, Los Angeles,\u00a0Chicago, Austin, and San Francisco.<\/p>\n

The Challenge<\/h3>\n

Vox Media creates digital content that caters to technology, sports,\u00a0and video game\u00a0enthusiasts. At any given time, the firm has multiple active projects, including\u00a0videos, podcasts and other digital content for a diverse audience across multiple\u00a0sites. Together, these digital projects drive demand for multiple petabytes of\u00a0data storage.<\/p>\n

Quantum StorNext provides the central storage management point for Vox,\u00a0connecting users to both primary and Linear Tape Open (LTO) archival storage. In\u00a0their legacy workflow, the digital assets currently in use were stored on SAN. Once\u00a0a project was completed, those assets were migrated to LTO tape. A NAS system\u00a0served as a staging area between the SAN and the LTO archives.<\/p>\n

The legacy workflow had multiple issues which prevented the team from meeting its\u00a0goals. First, it required many manual steps, making it cumbersome and susceptible\u00a0to failure. With over 150 content creators producing rich media assets and only two\u00a0media managers to move content to archive, the system could not keep up with the\u00a0growing data volumes. As a result, completed projects remained on expensive SAN\u00a0storage, increasing costs and exposing media managers to potential data loss in the\u00a0case of SAN failure.<\/p>\n

An additional issue was the inability to search media. Although Vox had an Evolphin\u00a0Media Asset Management (MAM) system, this system could not be integrated with\u00a0their LTO tape library. Lack of an effective search tool made it time-consuming to\u00a0find archived assets.<\/p>\n

What was needed was a storage system that could accelerate their workflow, help\u00a0get data off the SAN faster, and accelerate search in conjunction with the Evolphin\u00a0MAM systems. To accomplish this, it was also imperative that the new solution\u00a0integrate seamlessly their Quantum StorNext.<\/p>\n

The Solution<\/h3>\n

Vox conducted a thorough search and ultimately chose Cloudian HyperStore\u00a0object storage as its next-generation archive system. In their evaluations, Vox\u00a0found HyperStore to be an extremely scalable and flexible solution. And because\u00a0HyperStore was certified interoperable with Quantum StorNext and Evolphin, it\u00a0would therefore integrate seamlessly\u00a0with the existing environment.<\/p>\n

The team deployed a 1.3 petabyte\u00a0cluster at its New York headquarters\u00a0and began moving data to it. Because\u00a0HyperStore interfaced directly with\u00a0the StorNext SAN, the new workflow\u00a0eliminated the need for the NAS staging\u00a0area, immediately accelerating the\u00a0archive process.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith Cloudian HyperStore we have sped up our data archiving workflow by 10X,\u00a0allowing us to save cost and increase productivity by freeing up our primary storage\u00a0for active projects,\u201d said Sarah Semlear, director of post-production and technical\u00a0operations at Vox Media.<\/p>\n

The new workflow also eliminated the manual steps required with the LTO system,\u00a0enabling prompt archival of completed projects onto HyperStore and freeing up\u00a0expensive primary storage.\u00a0Sarah added, \u201cImplementation was straightforward. The Cloudian system integrated\u00a0easily and was up and running with our StorNext right away. The Cloudian team\u00a0was great to work with. They stuck with us through the process, even helping to\u00a0configure the workflow to further\u00a0increase performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking Forward<\/h3>\n

In the near future, Vox plans to\u00a0integrate the Evolphin MAM into\u00a0the workflow. Cloudian is proven\u00a0interoperable with Evolphin, and this\u00a0integration will allow Vox to rapidly\u00a0search media assets across all\u00a0storage tiers.<\/p>\n

Vox also plans to capitalize on\u00a0HyperStore\u2019s multi-site capabilities to provide disaster recovery capabilities.\u00a0HyperStore clusters in San Francisco and Washington DC will allow the team to\u00a0automate data replication for DR and for content distribution. This data fabric will\u00a0provide economical data protection, and provide local storage access at remote\u00a0locations, all under a single management console.<\/p>\n

Finally, the team plans to implement a cold storage option, to which the existing\u00a0HyperStore can push older content for long-term archive.\u00a0Sarah concluded, \u201cImplementing Cloudian HyperStore has already produced great\u00a0results, enabling a better workflow that helps us save time and money.
