Enables Customers to Redesign their Backup Architecture To Support Backup & Disaster Recovery in a Hybrid Cloud Deployment

FOSTER CITY, CA., September 24, 2013 — Cloudian®, Inc. ,today announced an agreement with CA Technologies to alleviate the headaches of big data backup for enterprises and managed service providers MPSs) via a powerful, combined solution that allows companies to easily redesign their current backup architecture to fully leverage cloud computing resources.

“Our research indicates that backup continues to be a major challenge for IT, and one that is not getting any easier in the era of cloud and big data,” said Simon Robinson, Research Vice President, 451 Research. “Interest in Cloud-based backup approaches is already strong, and the hybrid cloud backup model is emerging as the preferred method of deployment, especially for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This joint CA-Cloudian solution is a major step toward finding a simple, scalable, and affordable data protection solution that combines backup and disaster recovery.”

Today, IT and backup administrators are spending an inordinate amount of time managing backups, particularly when they involve tape technology. Disk-based backups are a good alternative but proprietary disk backup appliances can be expensive and difficult to manage. By pairing Cloudian object storage software with CA ARCserve®, Cloudian and CA Technologies are enabling customers to protect their data using commodity hardware instead of tape or proprietary backup appliances, significantly reducing the cost of acquiring and managing backups.

“As a leading cloud computing service provider in Japan, NIFTY has been providing object storage as a service and VMWare-based IaaS. Cloudian and CA’s joint enhancements of the ecosystem will open up more opportunities for customers to use our elastic and affordable NIFTY Cloud Storage Service,” said Takaya Ueno, general manager of Cloud Business Division, Cloud Business Group, NIFTY Corporation. “The new CA-Cloudian data protection solution promotes cloud-based backup usage and will further the prosperity of the cloud storage market.”

The combined solution empowers IT to back up data to a public, private or hybrid cloud. Hybrid clouds offer additional benefits such as faster backup and restore and disaster recovery. Smaller enterprises can easily re-direct their backup from on-premise to a public cloud. CA Technologies supports this flexible hybrid scenario where both private and public Cloudian instances are configured as backup targets, and each backup can be directed to either the private or public Cloudian instance.

“IT organizations are looking for backup solutions that automate intelligent execution of file and data movements, while reducing both hard costs and overall impact on the production environment,” said Steve Fairbanks, vice president, Product Delivery, Data Management, CA Technologies. “The cloud-based solution that CA Technologies and Cloudian have brought to market does exactly that.”

In addition, the combined solution opens up new opportunities for managed service providers to offer backup-as-a-service.

“CA Technologies shares our vision of our world where storage-as-a-utility is a reality, and storage solutions are simple, affordable and powerful,” said Giorgio Propersi, Cloudian’s General Manager, Americas and EMEA. “Together, we will enable enterprises to rid themselves of their backup worries while bringing MSPs another value-add that they can offer their customers, helping them build their business in a competitive market.”
